Will the conversion be this easy?

Hi John
I have done a few tests now and the short answer is that is being made very simple by the SBI! tech team. It really is a wonder to behold :). You MAY find you have a couple of extra things to do but the SBI! system has amazingly made the whole process very smooth. You will definitely need to do a couple of steps with Google and Bing Webmasters and other things but they are relatively straightforward. There will be full instructions soon, I'm sure.

Heidi from New Trenton wrote:I have completely prepared my site and used the HTTPS checker. I am confused about what to do, and when, for Google Search Console and Google Analytics.

How will it affect these? How do I keep all the old Analytics data? Do I set up new properties before or after the change?

I wish SBI had instructions on how (and when) to make the changes to Search Console and Analytics.

I also don't understand how the change to https will happen (I will push a button?) or what exactly it is in the context of Search Console and Analytics (what does it change and how do they link).

Help Elf has written that there will be an article covering Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

I do use BB2, but I use HTML blocks exclusively, and paste in my own HTML I get from Kompozer. Does that mean I have to convert everything manually?

Saul, if you use BB2, and add links with the overlay selector, then they'll all be converted to https.

I don't use BB2.

My understanding has been that SBI is taking care of most/all link conversion related to Google Search, Analytics, and the list of other 3rd party services that HE has mentioned earlier in this thread or one of the related ones. Is this being done ONLY for those who use BB2?

In other words, are those of us who upload our own HTML on our own for converting the things that will be automatically taken care of for BB2 users? And if that is true, does the HTTPS checker flag everything that needs changing - or only the things that those who use BB2 need to change?

Is the tool for converting our sites to https available yet?

And does anyone know when Google will start showing non-https sites with forms etc. as insecure in Chrome?

(I could have sworn I'd seen October 13 mentioned as the deadline, but am doubting myself now since I can't find it on Google.)

I've finished making all the adjustments recommended in the https resource checker, so I'm ready to roll as soon as the converter is available.

@Saul You should not. You should always reference internal links as relative URLs ... file-name.html vs http://yourdomain.com/file-name.html If you use BB2, use the Link Tool to create links, it will do it correctly for you.

@Heidi - Search Console will be after the switch of your site to https.

Analytics is one you do before. If it has been awhile since you put the code on your site, you will want to get the latest update from Google anyway.

You won't lose data on either of them as the http version should be retained as long as you don't delete it. The https is just seen by them as another domain within the same accounts.

@Sheralyn,
Is the tool for converting our sites to https available yet? No, but could be anytime. Announcement will be made here in the forums when it's ready.

And does anyone know when Google will start showing non-https sites with forms etc. as insecure in Chrome? Oct 17th.

No, it is for all SBI! sites.

It's for all SBI! sites.

Debs - Thanks so much for clarifying that the http->https link conversion process takes care of all SBI sites - that had been my understanding previously, and HUGE relief to know that's correct!

Thank you Debs! After 9 years, I just learned something new! The question now is do I need to go and change them all to relative links urgently, or just change as I go? Being that they are all http currently, will this cause a problem, or should I just change them as I can as a matter of best practice? Also, I believe that the full URL is needed for images, no? i.e. http://www.domain-name.com/images/image-name.jpg

Saul

Saul, best to get done as quickly as you can, it will be worth it.

No, images can be relative URLs; if you use the BB2 image block it takes care of the proper URL for you. If you don't, and you use BB2 it is images/image-name.jpg If you upload however it is image-files/image-name.jpg

Just wondering when the Https Switch will be available. We're two days away from October 17. Both my sites are ready to go (after many days of remaking about 50 maps- ugh), but I understand there will a few tasks to do after SBI does the switch over. Any word on that?

Hi Karen,
I cannot answer the release date question but I can say that there is beta testing under way. As for "To Do's" afterwards, Help Elf has been creating a pretty clear help page.

Basically, it's possible that a few odd things could pop up with the Post Move Checker. For example, I had a couple of really minor things. Easy to fix and that was it.

Then you will need to update Google and Bing and a few similar actions which can be done in your own time - so not too stressful.

Well done on the Maps! That sounds like a lot of work!

Thanks for the update, Paul. Yes, the maps were a lot of work, but now they're mostly images, so I won't have to create them a 5th time. I even found a few old Aardvark maps lurking in there;-)
Best, Karen

I greatly appreciate all the work SBI has done on this conversion. Thank you. I just hope I haven't missed the release of the actual conversion switch as tomorrow is the 17th October, Google's supposed deadline, and I do not see it on Site Central or in the forums?
