Help Elf here, with a release that will help you prepare for the change that Google will be implementing in its Chrome browser in early October.
[Update: The converter is now live. See this announcement post... https://forums.sitesell.com/viewtopic.php?f=136&t=224028 I'm going to I'm going to lock this and most other HTTPS threads. -- Help Elf]
That's right, the HTTPS tester is now available for you to check your site.
I've been calling it the tester here in the forums for a while now. But its official name is the HTTPS Resources Check, and that's what I'll be calling it going forward.
Who Is This For?
The HTTPS Resources Check is for any SBIer who has a live site on the day that we release the HTTPS conversion option. That date will be some time between the start of next week and the Chrome update in October.
If you register your domain name on or after the release of the conversion tool, your site will automatically use HTTPS. So there will be nothing for you to do.
If you're getting close to registering your domain name, you may want to consider waiting another 2-3 weeks. This will eliminate all the conversion work that I'll be discussing below and in the article I'll be publishing very soon.
If you do wait, don't sit on your hands. Start writing, editing and polishing your content. That way you'll jump-start your site with several pages of content in the first few days!
You can stop reading now if you plan to wait before registering your domain name. There's no need to know more. If you still want to register your name now, keep reading.
And if your site is already live, you'll want to keep reading too.
The HTTPS Resources Check
You'll find this new tool in the All Pages section of Site Central. Click on the link there to access it.
Once you're there, you'll be greeted with a brief description of the tool, and the Check My Site button.
Before you click on that button, click on the help question mark next to the headline. Read down to the Image (img) section. That will introduce you to the tool, what SBI! is going to convert for you, what you're going to need to convert, and what you can ignore.
I want you to read that part of the help first, because it will explain why some items will not be listed in the report. I'm not going to discuss them here, because I want you to read the help!
As you can see from the screenshot above, there are three columns in the report...
The Page column lists each page of your site that has at least one issue that needs to be resolved. Each file name is a link to that live page on your site (which opens in a new tab/window). If looking at the URL doesn't get the gears moving, view the live page to see what the URL is for. In the screenshot, there are several issues for this site (plus two more pages of them).
Because the Type column tells me what they are. Each type in that column is a link to the applicable section of the help file, where there are details on what you need to do to resolve that URL's issue. In the screenshot above, 4 items says img and 7 say js.
The remaining types are CSS, iframe, <embed> tag, <object> tag, <video> tag, <audio> tag, form action, and XML.
Not shown in the screenshot above is the number 1 on a gray square in the bottom right. That indicates the page number. If you have more than one page (more than 25 items), click on the Next button to go to the next page, or Prev to go to the previous page.
Working the Report
To begin, click on the Check My Site button. That will run the report. You'll receive an email from SBI! telling you that the report is ready for you. Click on the link in the email to view the results.
Important Note if you have more than one site: The report runs for whichever site you are currently logged in to. And the email you receive will be for that particular site as well. To begin work on another site, switch accounts (the link is in the top right of Site Central), or log out and log in again, selecting the other site.
As you'll read in the help, I recommend that you start with the items that you know are in Sitewide Dots (BB2) or SBI! Includes (UYOH). These are "fix it once" items that could eliminate a large portion of the issues on your site. For instance, the Statcounter URLs in the screenshot above are most likely in a Sitewide Dot. Editing that code in one page will fix the URL on all of the pages using that Sitewide Dot.
Once you've done the "fix it once" items, click on the Check My Site button again. Please only run the report once per day. If we have thousands of people running it several times a day, SBI!'s performance could be affected.
After you click the button, the report will run again. You'll receive another email telling you the report is ready. When you check this time, your report will be shorter, as all of those common issues will have been resolved.
Next, deal with the URLs that you know are in Reusable Blocks (BB2). That could eliminate several more items from the report.
Click on the Check My Site button again the next day. You'll see fewer items to deal with. Now all that's left are the ones that are per-page. So you'll have to work through these individually.
Some may need completely new code from the creator. Others may work simply by adding an "s" to "http" to make "https" (which you may have to do if the code/URL provider doesn't have an HTTPS version). If you do try the letter "s" fix, be sure to test that the functionality still works on the live page.
If it does not work, and there's no replacement code from the creator, you'll need to replace that functionality with something that uses HTTPS. Or, accept that this page of your site will not be secure, and the browsers will report it as not secure to any visitors to the page.
How Will I Know When I'm Done?
Great question! You'll know you're done when you click on the Check My Site button and there are no items to work on. You'll also see a short note telling you that there's nothing else left to do.
Congratulations! Your site is now ready for the HTTPS conversion. You'll have more tasks to do after your convert, but we'll deal with those tasks when that time comes. I'll be publishing a TNT article with a full list of things you'll need to do.
Fully Tested and Ready for You
The HTTPS Resources Check tool has been fully tested and optimized. The Dev team has used it, I've used it (my site had two issues, both for something I don't even use now and had forgotten about), the Content team has used it, and several SiteSell Pros and Forum moderators have used it.
We've eliminated as many standard issues as possible, leaving you with only those "one ofs" to fix. But we may have missed something standard. If you have one that's common to dozens of URLs in your report, or that you think other SBIers may have, let us know here, in this thread. I'll be monitoring it.
As usual, if you have technical issues, please contact Support at...
Until next time,
