(so much new stuff to learn! and I'm getting lost in all the SBI WP articles....)

Hello dear people!

I want to do a WP site, mostly blogging that may eventually lead to a monetized site. So I want to start something as inexpensive, yet as safe/secure as possible. I will very likely purchase a framework and child theme from the SBI recommended list (can't find the link right now).

In reading the SBI for WP articles, now I've learned about the existence of shared hosting and VPSs (which I think are two different things, but maybe overlap(?)). (I've also learned that a managed host is too expensive and probably not necessary for now).

I see the list of shared hosts on this page: https://sbiforwp.sitesell.com/wordpress ... g-options/ ; I'm not sure if these are also VPSs.

Does anyone have any recommendations for shared hosts or VPSs from the SBI list or their own experience they can share with me?

Thank you!
Debra

Hi Debra,

I don't know what your background is, but if you don't have strong IT skills, I wouldn't recommend a VPS where you're responsible for the server environment. (Unless you can afford a managed VPS, where someone else takes the responsibility for setting up and maintaining the server environment.) If that's you - great!

If it's not, then you want to look at either shared or managed WordPress hosting. We updated our list of recommended shared hosts a couple of weeks ago. You can find it here: https://sbiforwp.sitesell.com/wordpress-hosting-options/

We will also have updated managed hosting options soon.

You can go a long way to securing even a shared hosting site when you:

  • Choose a good host
  • Choose a strong username and password
  • Keep WordPress, theme, and plugins up to date
  • Deploy a recommended security plugin

Hope this helps,
Susanna

Hi Debra,

I'm using Siteground, and am very satisfied. Their support people are top notch and available around the clock per chat.

Thank you, Christophe.

I think I've decided to go with Bluehost (although I did not see it recommended by SBI). I've gotten a very strong recommendation from another source I highly respect; and it's only $3.49 a month.

However, I will definitely take a look at Siteground also.

Best,
Debra

Debra, there's a reason that Bluehost is not on our recommended list. In fact, no company owned by EIG is deemed acceptable any longer. They've bought up a lot of formerly excellent hosting companies and it's been downhill ever since.

Our updated list of recommended hosts is at http://www.sitesell.com/blog/2014/10/choosing-suitable-hosting-company-wordpress-website.html. For shred hosting, I use Siteground.

All the best,
Susanna

I use liquid web (https://www.liquidweb.com/ ) ... using a dedicated server with them ... but they also offer VPS packages from 59 dollars (totally pleased with performance, price and support)

I used to use servint (http://servint.net/) ... i had a technically difficulty so left because they stopped their phone support which i really wanted at the time ... when i moved to liquid web my whole site was faster , great servers , plus customer support with LW is the best i've experienced (chat or phone)

I did a huge amount of research before switching ... and i'm very happy with this server company

By the way with liquid web there is a managed wordpress option : https://www.liquidweb.com/wordpress/ ... i don't use it as i have my own server with them, but it looks good ... plus this option would really be for people with many wordpress sites

by the way with wordpress i highly recommend whatever host you get ... to use an SSD, it really helps with speed and database access time

Thanks to all of you in this thread (and other SBI! for WP threads), and for the support articles regarding hosting. I recently switched my WordPress blog from GoDaddy (whose previously stellar customer service has taken a nosedive) to SiteGround and so far I have been very pleased.

I have also heard (read) very good things about Liquid Web, which Stephen mentioned.

In appreciation,

Mark
