Best solopreneurial strategies, and questions, related to monetizing high-traffic sites with low-maintenance revenue streams ("passive monetization") offered by Google and other ad networks. "Passive" is not our recommended way to monetize, but it's a decent "way-station" until you are ready to increase your $-per-visitor ratio. Got a question or a tip on that? You've come to the right place!

I have the google ads in sitewide dots in my three sites. It means they should appear on all pages on the position I wanted.

The problem is that sometimes I find empty spaces with no ads where they were supposed to be.
It is irregular, because sometimes they are there and later they are not.

Any idea how can I fix or improve this.
No ads in my page means no money....

Hi Eddy -

If Google does not have a targeted ad to show on your page, then by default a blank space will show in the spot where you wanted an ad to show. But you can change the default option if you want to.

In your AdSense account, go to Content > Ad Units > +New Ad Unit > Text & Display Ads. When choosing your ad type, you'll see this:

Choose what you'd like to happen to your ad unit if Google has no targeted ads available:

* Collapse the ad unit if possible, otherwise show blank space (default)
* Collapse the ad unit if possible, otherwise show a solid color
* Show another URL, such as an image.

I hope this helps!

I checked and mine were like that. It is frustrating that they don't have enough ads for my sites.

Big Question:
After so many years with Google Adsense is there another "good" alternative we could try?

Hi Jayashree,

I clicked through to several pages on your site and saw two ads on each: one at the top and one at the bottom. Should there be more than that?

Lovely site, by the way - some beautiful, colourful pics. One thing - I found the tabs at the top and in the drop-down menus very difficult to read (in fact I missed them when I first went to the site) because they're very small text and mostly black on blue which is hard to see. Maybe make them a different colour, to stand out more?

(Sorry off-topic, mods!).
