I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations or experience in building a site that has upwards of 1000 pages and how a site this big would be structured.

It seems that we shouldn't have more than 5-10 T3 pages linking to a T2 page so if we assume that every T2 has 10 pages, that leaves us with 100 T2 pages if we exceed 1000 pages for a site.

How would you structure this site so that it doesn't look cluttered?

Best regards,

I would try to keep the T2s to under 25 (under 20 is better, but that depends on your niche and what you've covered). I put would admin type pages in the footer and keep the main navbar for the meat of the T2s.

I wouldn't worry about having more than 10 T3s. I would have a sitewide visitor sitemap so all pages get listed; make it a T2. I prefer to link to less than a handful of pages within the content of T3s (too many choices, visitors have a tendency to take less action within your site). But the sitemap covers all pages, so you won't have orphan pages. I would link once or twice from T3s to other T3s under the same T2 to gain visibility for all T3s.

By spreading out the T3s among all T3s under a specific T2, the pages won't look cluttered with bunches of links, but they all get linked to.

Thank you Debs for your comprehensive reply. Your suggestions definitely make things easier.

If I had a T2 that possibly had many T3 pages, let's say 42 for example, would it be ok to link 5 or so T3 pages directly from the T2 and have the other 38 T3 pages all link to each other at the end of the page using "Next [Topic] Article" links?

Also, could I set up a Blog T2 and link recent T3 posts from there as the site continues to grow even if they should technically fall under a separate T2 categories?

I really like the idea of a sitewide visitor sitemap. Thank you for that.

Best regards,

Yes to both of your questions. But don't link repeatedly to T3s under another T2 unless it makes absolute sense to do so. Also, for Next Topic ... I would give the topic; not just "next" ... let them know what they will find ... or something like a series:

Have you ever wondered ... topic 1 ... topic 2?

or similar ... make them think, entice to get the click so they do stay and read more :)
