Hello all! :-)

This post doesn't fit anywhere else - because it's so random. So here goes...

I haven’t been around much for the last few weeks. My traffic has been dropping slowly for a year now and quite recently it dropped at an increasing rate - pretty terrifying to be honest (please don't ask me why - I don't know - a variety of reason I suspect. When/if I've turned it around I will report back).

I'm really having to make strict choices about how I spend my time and focus on my business.

I also hesitate to comment much at the moment. How can I be of service to you when I’m not sure myself what’s working for me and what not.

However, I do want to contribute something, and since I’m in the process of taking a bird’s eye view, I’ll share some odds and sods of things that have occurred to me now and those I had wanted to share for some time, but never got around to.

So, here my random tips...

Working on your business v working in your business (not sure that's proper use of English)
Stop working in your business every now and then to take a bird’s eye view of all that you’re doing. You may be surprised at what you discover, how inspiring it can be and how it can prompt you into action.

Title tag
Wikihow - one of my competitors - added: (with images) to it’s title tag. I’m assuming they tested that, but who knows. In any case - it gave me an idea to squeeze in little ‘extras’ in the tag.
Sure, your description is important, but Google often picks and serves it’s own idea of what it should be from the content of your article. You do have control of what your title tag should say. I found I had become sloppy - just using the keyword and thereby losing a great opportunity.

Mental health
If your site focusses on any mental health subject the very best affiliate programmes are BetterHelp ($100 for a single signup - forget about LivePerson!) and HypnosisDownloads (in fact the latter would suit a whole lot of other subjects too)

If you’re not a native speaker of English
You absolutely need a native speaker to check your content. I use Google docs because working together with my wonderful VA in the UK is child’s play.

PDF of your article
Following on from the previous tip… By writing your article first in Google docs (or Word or Pages), you can download it as a PDF which you can publish as a freebie - whether in exchange of an email address or not.

The most referrals to my site come from Pinterest and FB. It occurred to me that my site isn’t really optimised for Pinterest with only horizontal images. I came across this tip: ... /articles/
I’ve now added this (site-wide) to my header I<meta property="og:type" content="article" />
<meta property="article:author" content="Elly Prior" />
The other meta tags are added automatically by SBI
I’m now adding vertical images to pages.

Following on from my tip about Pinterest - I had to untick the header on quite a number of pages (not sure if that was absolutely necessary, but I'm particularly cautious at the moment). They’re easy to find as I’ve place my ‘housekeeping’ and monetisation pages in separate folders. This has come in handy on a number of other occasions

Write to notify the artist and say thank you for making the image available, adding the url. On Flickr that's a link back to your site. With a bit of luck the artist shares the article, but in any case it’s a kind thing to do.

Don’t be tempted to just opt for PayPal as a payment provider. I’ve found that people increasingly want to use their credit card through Stripe. Not sure why. To reduce cart abandonment - give your purchasers a choice.

Site concept keyword
Remember to mention your site concept keyword. "Doh!”, you might think. Yep, but this is just in case you’re like me - you didn’t keep your eyes on the ball. My site concept word is 'relationship advice' and of course I use both words and I think the search engines are clever enough to figure it, but… you never know.

Gather images in downtimes
You’re likely to be much more open to all kinds of images you could use on existing and future pages when you’re not looking for images for a specific use.

Additions to articles
You can add interest to an article not only with images (vital!!) and shareablity with the following:
Pinterest image
Highlighting a phrase you’ve written
worksheet PDF
PDF of your article
Animoto video
Audio version of your article

No, I haven’t done that on every page - yet, but I certainly do my best on new articles!

For newbies! Just in case. Don’t make the mistake I did in my pre SBI days. :shock:
I changed the filename of a page because I thought it would sound better with a different name. :lol: I had no idea of the significance of a filename as an address!

Grrrrrreat post, Elly!

Regarding your traffic...

I've suffered from strange traffic drops in the past, ones with no discernible cause like something you changed or a big Google release.

Equally, I've benefitted from traffic rises with no discernible cause.

So long as you're doing the fundamentals right, I wouldn't get overly stressed about it (i know... easier said than done). The next 12 months could easily see a steady traffic rise, over and above what you would expect.

Also bear in mind that all traffic is not equal. In my experience, quantity and quality of traffic are often inversely proportional. In other words....

When traffic drops, metrics like time on site and # of pages visited goes up. So maybe Google's just cleaning out the trash for you. :D

Regarding your point about Title Tags...

Mine could definitely use some work, so thanks for the reminder.

I read a nice hack the other day (can't remember where) about studying the ads that appear for your keywords. You can bet your bottom dollar that most of those ads have been split-tested umpteen times, so it makes sense to use them as "inspiration" for your own title tags.

Thanks again, Elly. And keep on keeping on. You have a great site with great content. Just keep on doing what you do best. Google will send you the traffic you deserve in the long run. :D

Thanks Elly! Great post and I agree with both you and Harvey.
I agree with you on having to take a bird's eye view of our sites from time to time. We tend to go on auto-pilot and take a systematic approach when things are going well or are steady. And, I agree with Harvey on the level of concern regarding your traffic.

Note it, keep an eye on it, try your best to find where the decrease is coming from but don't be overly concerned and overdo any changes--what worked for you before will work for you again--but sometimes during these dips in traffic we get overly focused on the past.

My two cents... look forward and keep your site evolving as you have done from the start. I've found that for me, the evolution gives me direction for changes I make to older pages and sections that are active rather than reactive and end up benefiting the site (and my traffic) in the long run.

I don't know how it works on Stripe or other payment processing systems, but Paypal gives you the option of putting in an url to send the customer to if they abandon the cart. Just doing this now, so we'll see if it helps with my larger types of products.

With regards to my traffic - it's not just an ordinary drop - I've never worried about that - it is what it is. However, it's a consistent drop - now at 25% total, and almost weekly dropping at an increasing rate over the last couple of months. It's made me aware that I'm too reliant on SE traffic and need to pay more attention to traffic from other sources.

Interesting. I didn't know that. I believe that Sendowl has a way of dealing with cart abandonment too (I now use Thinkific). However, I have noticed a steady decline in the use of Paypal in favour of direct use of cards via Stripe.

There are no title tags as such. Only Wikihow added "with images" in their title tag - perhaps making their title more clickable. I'm not so convinced, but it made me aware that I could do more with my title tags, particularly because you don't have much control over what the SE serve as your description.

Warm hugs your way! I've always enjoyed your thoughtful and helpful posts and here you go posting another one when you're in crisis, (dropping traffic is no fun).

I'm so sorry about your traffic issues - is there anyway to find out why your traffic is dropping? Is this a Penguin or Panda penalty? According to what I could find - the last Penguin 4.0 was launched around October 1, 2016.

Perhaps someone else can chime in with some advice or guidance.

Elly, this is what your site looks like on Semrush (which I know in some cases is not totally reliable) ...

So it looks like your traffic has been up and down, but mostly going up. Do you see something different?

I can think of a few things, but they're stabs in the dark. I certainly have pages that need to be reworked/updated. And I'm working on getting traffic from other sources. A few good people are very kindly looking at what might be happening too.

Yes, I have been keeping an eye on Semrush, but whilst it shows some of the drop since second quarter last year, the graph doesn't now reality. I have lost 20+% since January.

Still, I'm buoyant! :) I'm a tough cookie. :wink: (well.... uhhhhh... most of the time...)

Hi Elly.

SBI automatically adds <meta property="og:type" content="article"/> to every page of your site, except the home page, which receives <meta property="og:type" content="website"/>.

So you don't need to take that extra step (or you can remove it from the Sitewide box in the Head section of BB2).

It isn't sooo obvious what the most wanted response it because I make use of the opportunity to presell. However, at the bottom of each article, there is a blue box with a direct link to my most successful affiliate (counselling) programme ever. That doesn't mean conversions are particularly high, but the payout is.

In the top menu though, there's a separate button: Programmes and Courses.

Also, in the articles are links to other sales pages. I have to admit though, that in the newer articles I tend to wait a bit with monetising and that can mean I haven't done the best possible job of doing so. So, thank you for raising my awareness. :-)
