Blog It! enables evergreen "Theme-Based Content Sites" to use RSS to distribute new pages via a technique we call "site-blogging!" This forum is for exchanging Blog It! ideas and tips. (If you are interested in full-blogging (ex., adding a full WordPress blog to your site), THE way to go is through Infin It!. See that forum.)

Hi All

I've already read the very helpful http://sbitips.sitesell.com/style-your-blog-it-page.html but I'm wanting to make some further changes to the look of my blog and thought here would be a good place to ask.

1) Is it possible to include more wording from the post on the blog page (currently only shows first line or two). Ideally I'd prefer to show at least two/three paragraphs
2) I'd like to have larger images than these thumbnails, is that possible?
3) I'd like to specify which image is used (not just the first one in the post) Is it possible to remove the automatic thumbnail option and just add an image another way?
4) Can I remove the wording Continue Reading "title of post here" so it just says Continue Reading (I usually have quite long titles and the wording being repeated looks a little odd)

Essentially I'm trying to make the page look more like a traditional blog page. It might be that these things aren't possible in Blockbuilder, would they be if I uploaded my own HTML for the blog?

Thanks in advance
Kate

Hi Kate,

When you want to customize more than the style of the page, to really make it your own, I recommend you use Bloglets instead of just ticking the box to Add to RSS/Blog It! in new pages.

However I want to give you a caution when adding paragraphs; make them unique unto themselves; don't copy from the new page or you risk duplicate content issues within the site. A sentence or two is ok, but paragraphs is something else.

2) I'd like to have larger images than these thumbnails, is that possible?

Under Bloglets it is.

3) I'd like to specify which image is used (not just the first one in the post) Is it possible to remove the automatic thumbnail option and just add an image another way?

Under Bloglets you can do this. You would use HTML/CSS to manually add the image call with the size attributes.

4) Can I remove the wording Continue Reading "title of post here" so it just says Continue Reading (I usually have quite long titles and the wording being repeated looks a little odd)

This one I can't answer yet. But I will try to get an answer for you today.

I have a sample site I use to test out different things. You can see how I tested the above using Bloglets here: [Domain Private]

All my best,

Debs

OK, I found the answer for #4. Jeff is right in that you can't change the standard RSS/Blog It! entries. But, again, you can do it with Bloglets.

However you would not use the URL box in the Bloglet; but instead put the text you want to use to link to the page within the Bloglet description and use the <a href...></a> tag to make it link to the landing page you want.

<a href="FILENAME OF PAGE">Continue Reading...</a> Replace FILENAME OF PAGE with the actual file name of the page you want the link to go to. Don't do the whole URL thing, just the file name.

All my best,

Debs

Sounds like bloglets will be the way to go, I've not explored them yet so will have a look and post any questions I may have. Thanks again for the speedy replies!

Kate, I only use bloglets on my site:
[Domain Private]

I particularly enjoy being able to schedule bloglets in advance! Have done mine up till mid January, but can obviously still slot others in on the fly, as and when I want to promote a page.

All the best,

Thanks for all the help on this, Bloglets are definitely the way to go for getting the look I want. I've started creating them and have managed to add the Continue Reading... wording/link but can't get rid of the automatic wording which includes the whole Page Title. I'm sure it's some simple code but I can't figure it out, can anyone help?

Great that worked although I've now decided to keep the whole title as the link, doesn't look so odd when there are more words between it and the title. Next question, is there a way to delete old blog posts? I've tried going back into the page unchecking the blog box and resaved the page but it doesn't seem to have made a difference.

Kate, you currently have 4 newly created bloglets (if I counted correctly) so set the limit in BlogIt to 4. All the old ones should drop out. Then just before you create a new bloglet, set the limit to 5 and so on, till you reach your preferred number of posts on the page.

Future dated bloglets obviously won’t affect the current ones one your page.

All the best,

Good idea, I'll do that and keep creating/making the list longer as I go until the old ones don't show.

Another quick question for you helpful people!

Here's the code I'm using for my Bloglets...

<a href="Mexico-Wedding-Invitation.html">
<image src="[Domain Private]/images/Bloglet-Passport-Mexico.jpg"
style="float:right; margin-left:20px;" width = "400" height = "400"
alt="Mexico Wedding Invitation Passport" title="Mexico Wedding Invitation Passport"></a>We specialise in designing authentic looking Passport Invitations for weddings and other events. When Alisha and Scot got in touch about their upcoming wedding in the Riveria Maya, Mexico we discussed creating a US Passport (representing where they are both from) or a Mexican one. This Mexican Passport won as they wanted something realistic looking to excite their guests about their upcoming trip.<br><br>Read more about what we designed for the happy couple here...

I think the width/height code is messing up the look of the images when viewed on a mobile. Can I simply remove all reference to size and it will just display correctly automatically on each size screen? On a computer, I'd like the image to be pretty big, roughly half the width of the Bloglet.

My coding knowledge is basic at best so if anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be forever grateful! If there's anything else dodgy in the code please let me know that too before I keep making more Bloglets!

On my biggest site (not my health site) where I Blogit, I fill in the title in Blogit with whatever I want, and also the url. Then I use a code (in the description field) that could look like this:

<img src = "[Domain Private]/images/Bloglet-Passport-Mexico.jpg" hspace="15" vspace="10" align = "right" title = "Mexico Wedding Invitation Passport" alt = "Mexico Wedding Invitation Passport"><p>We specialise in designing authentic looking Passport Invitations for weddings and other events. When Alisha and Scot got in touch about their upcoming wedding in the Riveria Maya, Mexico we discussed creating a US Passport (representing where they are both from) or a Mexican one. This Mexican Passport won as they wanted something realistic looking to excite their guests about their upcoming trip.</p><p>Read more about what we designed for the happy couple here...
</p>

Also you can put in more </p><p> to act as breaks.

I stopped putting the width = "400" height = "400" as it works better if I don't do it. I use smaller pics than you do. To make it more in line with the pictures automatically generated if you just tick the RSS when saving a page. (I use 175 x 175 pictures)

Also in the RSS box I have added lots more text. In the introductory area, you can put whatever you want there, even pictures. Just use </p><p> to put breaks in text.

That's what I do, guess if its incorrect someone will tell you :D

Hope that helps

Best Liz
