I started my site in 2008, built a lot in the first few years, let it coast a long time, now adding on some more pages and updating.

Moved my site from health-and-natural-healing to a shorter name [Domain Private], a few months ago and lost two-thirds of my traffic or more.

What is the reason why so many of my 214 pages have been dropped from Google?

Is it because they have been inactive for so long?

Sue-Anne, your pages are continually dropped then reindexed. It's not really worth getting panicked about it, because typically they are always in flux. Sometimes with a change in domain, they take a while to come back, and of course, you've said it, if there is a lot of activity (page rebuilds, social media promotions, etc) this can help get them back in the spotlight. :D

Try resubmitting your sitemap/rss feed to Google; if it's already on the list, delete it, then resubmit it; that'll force Google to recrawl all of your pages. I had a bunch of pages dropped last year and resubmitting the rss feed, had them back in the index about 2 weeks later.
